- Many historical sites, the great Byzantine past of the city, the good organized way for visiting them, excellent transportation means - if you know how to use them. Taxi not expencive. Food, go where you see Turkish people eating...People mostly polite and helpful.
- Bad Points
- In turistic sections as Capali Carsi or others, the noisy way of the comerciants to find customers...The different kind of tickets for the transportation means. Get the "Akbil" from the begining...

- Good Points
- An excellent place for a city break. So much to see and do during the day, all within easy reach of the hotel in the Historic area. Great Metro system for getting around, such as when we went to the Sapphire Observation Tower but most sights are within walking distance, including the Bosphorus sea trip. Plenty of choice for restaurants in the evening. Felt safe at all times at night. Very, very clean streets, we ended up trying to spot a piece of litter!
Being January, it was very quiet when visiting the Mosques and Palaces, which was a plus point. - Bad Points
- Out of season we found the staff of restaurants very pushy, trying to get us in to eat in their premises. However, people all very friendly and helpful and food good.
We made a mistake by not realising how cold Istanbul was in January! Best check the average temperaturesfor winter city break.

- Safe, clean, friendly, welcoming and historically and architecturally amazing.
- Bad Points
- Small children begging was difficult and Grand Bazaar closed for all the time we were there but that was just unlucky for us.

- Beware of crimonals. We were approached at night after dinner in a shop by a guy that was under the influence and the shop owner did not even intervene. The dubious guy wanted to know if we were going to buy alcohol etc and was getting aggressive. That was in Sultanahmet
On our second day, we were running after a bus and a guy in front of a shop tripped my partner and when we retaliated, he become very aggressive so we just carried on.
These individuals migth be a minority but I know the Turks very well and te criminal ones can go very far knowing as strangers you have no chance against them.

- I had wanted to go there for years.It is a huge bustling city.The old part is fascinating.
More history than you can shake a stick at.
It is far more technologically advanced that you might think; 3g, wifi and ATMs abound.
The Mosques are beautiful.
Good food

- Get used to getting hassled.
Istanbul is a busy place.

- A wonderful, exciting and friendly city - so safe for a single woman to wander in. People mostly helpful and warm. Public transport second to none. A dream city for shopping!
- Bad Points
- Traffic horrendous at times and air can be polluted in warm weather - often come home with a bit of a cough. Some taxi drivers can overcharge. Don't die trying to cross the roads!
